A web monetization tool for creators

Coil was an alternative to ad-based revenue, designed to give creators a fairer way to earn while keeping the user experience clean. Instead of displaying banners or locking content behind paywalls, it used micropayments that flowed in real time whenever a subscriber viewed participating content. This approach gave users an ad-free environment and gave creators income directly tied to attention.

At its core, Coil connected with the Web Monetization Standard, an open initiative that allowed streaming payments across the internet. Subscribers paid a monthly fee, creators added a simple monetization tag to their site, and Coil handled the rest in the background. 

How does Coil work for creators and audiences?

The main strength of Coil was its frictionless setup. Creators only needed to add a short line of code to start receiving income, and payments streamed directly to Interledger-compatible wallets such as Uphold or GateHub. No commissions were taken, meaning creators kept everything they earned. For audiences, the biggest benefit was ad-free browsing, allowing content to be enjoyed without distractions.

Flexibility was another highlight. Coil worked across different types of content, including personal blogs, YouTube videos, and Twitch streams. This gave it potential reach across platforms, but adoption was uneven. While some creators praised its simplicity, others found earnings limited due to the small subscriber base compared to traditional monetization methods. The idea was strong, yet the ecosystem never became mainstream. 

Performance was reliable since Coil functioned quietly in the background. Once installed, the browser extension automatically detected monetized pages and streamed payments without affecting load times or playback. However, its infrastructure-focused design came with trade-offs. Without community features or discovery tools, creators often had to drive their own traffic. Coil offered the mechanics of monetization but not the visibility or engagement that many platforms provide. Note, the service has been shut down in March 2023.

Final verdict on Coil

Coil offered a bold vision of a micropayment-driven web where creators could thrive without ads or platform fees. It gave users a cleaner browsing experience and creators a transparent way to monetize. Still, its limited adoption and lack of community tools made it more of a proof of concept than a mainstream solution. As part of the broader Web Monetization movement, however, it remains a noteworthy experiment.
